TOPOGRAPHIC SURVEYS BY DRONE

Brief 1:

To help plan the rate at which rock armour could be placed it was necessary to get accurate data.

A walk over topographic survey would be risky to undertake. A trip or slip on the rocks could result in physical harm to staff and damage to expensive equipment.

Photogrammetry can create a 3d model that can be examined to determine volumes. It is quicker, safer and more accurate than conventional methods.

The level of accuracy up to 3cm in the x,y,z.

The greater the accuracy required, the more expensive the survey.

Brief 2:

Our client wanted to reduce risk to their land surveyors and to check the accuracy of their previously calculated stockpiles of coal. We surveyed the site and used previously established Ground Control Points to georeference and accurately create a 3d model that can be examined to determine volumes. From the point cloud shown below we were also able to create a contour map and a digital terrain model by removing unwanted point cloud data e.g. The conveyor system.

Conclusion: We provided results more accurate that previous obtained using conventional land based techniques. It was also welcome as a safer alternative that negated the risk of the land surveyors getting stuck in the sludge that dominated the site during episodes of poor weather.
